RHINOS WITHOUT BORDERS
We're on a mission to move 100 rhinos from South Africa to Botswana in order to save them from poaching and develop a new breeding nucleus.

Rhinos Without Borders is a partnership between Great Plains Conservation and AndBeyond to move 100 rhinos from the highest poaching zones in South Africa, to the lowest poaching zones in the whole of Africa, Botswana, to save them from the poaching crisis. It will be a modern day Noah's ark for rhino genes and we hope that this seed population will increase in size and have a positive impact on the rhino population, which is currently in deficit with more rhinos dying than are currently being born. Once the rhinos reach Botswana they will be protected by anti-poaching teams, who will also protect other species in the process. When we fight for rhinos we fight for all wildlife in Africa, and when we take on a project to protect rhinos, we do so with the intention to create a protective umbrella for all wildlife in these wilderness areas.

Dealing a Crushing Blow to Poachers With Beverly and Dereck Joubert
The wildlife conservationists discuss their efforts to save Africa’s rhino population

By RALPH GARDNER JR.
June 23, 2015 8:56 p.m. ET

In Times Square, with government officials, guests and tourists looking on, an industrial rock crusher pulverized a ton of confiscated ivory.

Ivory crushes, what the rallies like the one last week are called, are meant to raise the public’s awareness about the illegal ivory trade—to get people to stop buying ivory and to end the killing of the tens of thousands of elephants and rhinos that are being driven toward extinction.

Among those watching Friday were Beverly and Dereck Joubert, filmmakers and wildlife conservationists who have a special distinction: In late April, from Botswana, they spearheaded the largest rhino airlift to date.

The couple flew the first 10 of 100 rhinos from South Africa, where poaching is soaring, to neighboring Botswana, where elephants—and now rhinos—are as safe as anywhere in Africa.

And for one simple reason: “The policy in Botswana is shoot to kill,” Mr. Joubert explained, referring to the poachers, when we met in Midtown the afternoon before the rally. “They take this very seriously, from the president and the minister of the environment, wildlife and tourism on down.”

Because of that policy, according to Mr. Joubert, Botswana holds a third of all of Africa’s elephants. An average of 34,000 elephants are killed every year to support the ivory trade, U.S. Interior Secretary Sally Jewell told the crowd at the rally.

According to the Jouberts, a rhino is killed every 7.5 hours. Today, there are only an estimated 4,000 to 5,000 white rhinos and 20,000 black rhinos left in Africa.

For that reason, the Jouberts and the Botswanan government took no chances after the rhinos arrived in Maun, the town that serves as the gateway for the safari trade in the Okavango Delta. The animals flew in specially designed crates aboard the largest plane ever to land at Maun’s airport.

“Once they were off-loaded we had to cart them in 10 trucks and drive about six hours,” Mr. Joubert recalled. “That’s where we knew we were going to be vulnerable. The extra security of the military was key.”

The Botswanan military provided a 60-member security detail, “a highly trained, dedicated team of soldiers,” Mr. Joubert explained. “We had a helicopter to scout ahead in case there were any ambushes.”

There were also regular stops so the veterinarians, who were part of the entourage, could examine the animals for stress. All were in good condition.

I expressed surprise such precautions were necessary, given Botswana’s zero-tolerance policy.

“The value of these animals is so high,” Mr. Joubert explained. “Even though there were only 10, their value is $5 [million] to $8 million just in the horn value.” Those who covet the horn, particularly in Asia, believe it can cure everything from cancer to a flagging libido.

The Jouberts recently visited China, where they were interviewed by celebrity TV talk show host Yang Lan about the mass destruction of wildlife associated with the importation of ivory. The segment attracted 200 million viewers and Ms. Lan’s social media forum on the subject drew 195 million followers.

The conservationists sound optimistic that China will ban ivory imports, once more of the public understands the impact on the environment. Mr. Joubert cited research he said showed that the vast majority of the Chinese people have no idea ivory comes from dead animals.

“They’ve heard elephants grow six sets of teeth,” Ms. Joubert added, and many believe elephant tusks and rhino horns also grow back. “We were saying, you have to know it’s blood ivory. Animals are being killed for you.”

However, China isn’t the only culprit. The illegal ivory trade also has been robust in the U.S. The ivory crush was held only blocks from the Diamond District, where three years ago the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service seized $2 million worth of ivory.

The 10 rhinos rescued from South Africa all have radio-tracking devices and microchips and were taken to the same, undisclosed location. “We’re trying to create a breeding nucleus,” Mr. Joubert explained. “It takes 10.”

They arrived at their destination around dusk.

“One of them at a time stepped out of their crates", the conservationist continued. “Some charged off confused. Others started eating immediately.”

“As each crate opened we could feel the exhilaration,” Ms. Joubert recalled. “It was quite emotional.”

The couple spent the night sleeping on the ground, surrounded by the rhinos. “In the pitch black, we would hear the rhinos moving all around us,” Ms. Joubert reported. “To hear the snorting and wheezing and communicating was amazing for us.”

Fundraising for the project is ongoing at www.trevolta.com/rhinos; the cost of relocating each rhino is about $45,000. Based on the success of the inaugural airlift, the Jouberts have expanded their mission.

“We will get to the hundred by the end of next year,” Mr. Joubert said. “Our new target is 250.”

First Rhinos in Massive African Airlift Released in Botswana
It's the first stage of the world’s largest rhino airlift, meant to protect a dwindling population of the animals.

By Brian Clark Howard, National Geographic
PUBLISHED MAY 07, 2015

Ten rhinos have been safely released in northern Botswana, after a long journey that entailed a cargo plane, a crane, dozens of soldiers, and six weeks in quarantine.

The animals were captured from an overpopulated park in South Africa and were moved to an undisclosed location in a sparsely populated reserve in Botswana last week that is better protected from poachers.

The relocation project, called Rhinos Without Borders, aims to move 100 rhinos by next year, the largest attempted airlift of rhinos in history.

The first ten were released on April 28, after touching down in the largest aircraft ever to land at Botswana's Maun International Airport, an Ilyushin 76, according to Dereck Joubert, one of the project's leaders.

“It was a great success and we are all feeling euphoric from the amazing experience,” Beverly Joubert, another project leader, said via email.

The Jouberts are National Geographic explorers-in-residence who are collaborating on the airlift with the tourism groups Great Plains Conservation and andBeyond. The husband and wife team work as wildlife filmmakers and conservationists based in Botswana's Okavango Delta. (Read a Q&A with the Jouberts on the project.)

Dereck Joubert says the bold project is necessary because rhinos reached a tipping point last year, with more killed by poachers than were born in the wild. An estimated 4,000 to 5,000 black rhinos and 20,000 white rhinos remain in Africa, with another one killed by poachers every seven and a half hours. Their horns are hacked off and sold in China and Vietnam on the black market for medical treatments that western scientists say don't work.

Big Effort

Getting the rhinos from the airport to deep into the Okavango Delta was no easy task. Already packed in crates, the rhinos were loaded onto trucks and escorted by 60 soldiers, to deter potential poachers.

Along the way, a wheel came off one of the trucks and the two-ton rhinos had to be moved into another truck via crane. The convoy had to cross several rivers, while a helicopter was sent ahead to scout for poachers. The heat was a relentless 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 Celsius), which meant the team had to make sure the animals didn’t overheat.

By sundown, the rhinos were released into their new homes, less than 24 hours from the start of their journey from the staging area in an undisclosed part of South Africa. There, the rhinos had been monitored for disease for six weeks and fitted with microchips to monitor their locations. But under the watchful eye of the Botswana military, the rhinos “finally ran free,” says Dereck Joubert.

“One bull [male rhino] turned back and as a deep sign of appreciation charged the container he had been cooped up in, putting a massive dent in it,” says Joubert. (Learn about the controversy around legal rhino hunting.)

The relocation process is expensive, about $45,000 per rhino, but Rhinos Without Borders has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars from supporters and will soon be moving more rhinos.

The ultimate goal is doubling Botswana’s wild rhino population, now estimated at 77 to 100 animals.

Largest Rhino Airlift Ever to Move 100 At-Risk Animals
Rhinos Without Borders project is transferring animals from South Africa to safer parks in Botswana.

By Brian Clark Howard, National Geographic
PUBLISHED MARCH 30, 2015

Weighing up to two and a half tons each, rhinos aren't easy to herd, let alone pack into crates and ship across national borders in airplanes.

But that's what conservationists are doing with about a hundred rhinos in South Africa, in an admittedly desperate bid to save the endangered animals from poachers and establish new populations in the wild.

"Rhino conservation is a desperate situation, so we are moving rhinos from the highest poaching areas to the lowest poaching areas," says Dereck Joubert, a wildlife filmmaker and conservationist based in Botswana's Okavango Delta.

There are an estimated 4,000 to 5,000 black rhinos and 20,000 white rhinos left in Africa, with another one killed by poachers every seven and a half hours, says Joubert, a National Geographic explorer-in-residence. That's more than a thousand rhinos slaughtered a year, mostly so their horns can be hacked off and sold in China and Vietnam on the black market.

The horn is marketed as a cure for a wide range of ailments and fetches about $65,000 (U.S.) per kilogram (2.2 pounds) on the street, even though Western scientists dismiss its purported medical uses. "It's smoke and mirrors; it does nothing," says Joubert. "It's like chewing your fingernails." (Read more about rhino wars.)

Joubert and his wife Beverly launched a nonprofit campaign last year to move 100 rhinos from the highest poaching zones in South Africa, to the lowest poaching zone in the whole of Africa, Botswana. The project is now called Rhinos Without Borders, a collaboration with tourism partners Great Plains Conservation and andBeyond.

The animals are being treated for illnesses and parasites. In a few months, they'll be flown by cargo plane to another undisclosed location in a park in northern Botswana.

These types of airlifts have been tried before, for rhinos, elephants, and other animals, but the Jouberts' plan makes it the largest airlift of rhinos in history. The team hopes to collect another 25 rhinos from South Africa by year's end and move 65 more next year.

At $45,000 per rhino, it's an expensive operation. And each move takes months to complete.

Big Moves
Game managers have been moving rhinos for decades in an effort to restock dwindling populations and thwart rampant poaching. Some of the moves are to and from private game reserves but many have been paid for by African governments, with some support from international nonprofits such as the World Wildlife Fund.

Rhinos and other animals are being moved overland to more secure zones in Kruger National Park in South Africa, away from the porous and poacher-infiltrated border with Mozambique. Twenty-five black rhinos were airlifted to Zambia from South Africa between 203 and 2010, in an effort to return the species to a country where it had disappeared by 1993. (Learn more about moving rhinos.)

In Botswana, the Jouberts hope to double the current wild rhino population, from an estimated 77 to 100 animals to 200 animals within a couple of years. Before the advent of modern hunting, the country was home to a thriving population. Today, about 80 percent of the world's wild rhinos live in South Africa. (Read a Q&A with the Jouberts on the project.)

Botswana is considered relatively safe for rhinos in part because it has a human population of just two million, compared to 53 million in South Africa, reducing human pressure.

Botswana's government has also enlisted the military to defend against poachers and maintains a controversial "shoot to kill" policy against them. And Joubert says that corruption is relatively low, so that government collusion with poachers is less of a problem than in some other African countries.

How to Move a Rhino
Moving a rhino is even more involved than it sounds. The process begins with the Jouberts' team working with game managers in South Africa to identify animals in reserves that are crowded or are facing intense poaching threats.

Cathy Dean, director of Save the Rhino International, says game managers look for rhino populations that are nearing the capacity of their habitat to support them. The closer the population gets to that point, the more the birth rate goes down, which means fewer rhinos, says Dean, who is not involved with the Jouberts' project but has worked on other rhino moves through her London-based charity.

Once the animals are selected, a warden darts them with a sedative, typically from a helicopter. Then the rhinos are roped, blindfolded, given an antidote to the sedative, and walked into a cage. The animals are kept in quarantine for six weeks—to reduce the chance of them spreading disease—and are outfitted with microchips in their body and horn.

"That means we know instantly if the horn is separated from the body by a poacher," says Dereck Joubert.

When the rhinos are ready for new homes, they're loaded onto commercial freight planes, up to five per flight. Beverly Joubert says that flying provides higher security from poachers and reduces the time the animals have to be sedated, although it costs more than overland transport.

The process carries a mortality rate of 2 to 5 percent, mostly due to the risk of the rhinos overdosing on tranquilizers or overheating, say the Jouberts, although veterinarians have succeeded in driving the death rates down over time.

The animals are released only on land where other rhinos had not previously established territories, to avoid conflicts, Beverly Joubert says. It doesn't take long for the new arrivals to mark out their own space with their droppings.

So far, Rhinos Without Borders has moved only white rhinos, but it plans to eventually relocate a few of the more endangered black rhinos. Young rhinos that are just a few years old are preferred because they have several years of reproduction ahead.

The campaign is a partnership between the Jouberts' Great Plains Foundation and their Great Plains Conservation travel business and the safari company and Beyond. Rhinos Without Borders has raised more than $260,000 for the project through the crowdfunding site Trevolta.

"Time is running out and we need to trigger something positive."
- Dereck Joubert

Beverly Joubert says the key to the program's long-term success will be making sure the local communities in Botswana benefit from the rhinos through ecotourism. In South Africa, some communities support poachers for a cut of horn sales. (Learn about the controversy around legal rhino hunting.)

The program has attracted some criticism. South African game warden Bruce Leslie has told the news media that it remains to be seen whether moving rhinos around will afford them enough protection against relentless poaching.

Asked if conservation dollars are well spent on moving rhinos, Dean of Save the Rhino says there is no "one size fits all answer ... You have to consider the objectives of the particular project and ask if there are cheaper ways of achieving the same thing."

Dereck Joubert argues that desperate times call for desperate measures. "Time is running out and we need to trigger something positive," he says. "It's no good to talk about how Africa is losing its wildlife without working on any solutions."

The poor prospects for Africa's rhinoceros populations weigh on my heart and mind. I've seen but one in the wild and only at great distance but simply the existence of this fantastic beast boggles the mind, along with the dangers it faces. The heroic effort to move some to a safe place appears to be a critically important last resort. I wish the team well in carrying out this mission.

Ecotourism has far more potential to create sustainable jobs in Africa that cattle raising, farming or mining. but unless we find ways of including rural communities in our ecotourism value chain and building resilient rural economies, impoverished families will always be tempted to poach for survival. This campaign cannot succeed with geography alone, it requires behaviour change across the world, for Africans firstly to stand firm that their wildlife is not for sale and for Asia to reject the idea that these bloody trophies will bring them status. For me this campaign title evokes far more than the physical act of relocation and instead invites us to consider conservation as global challenge that we are all responsible for.

We should not tamper with the nature. But from the moment someone, usually someone stupid, decides to fiddle with the way things are (in this case by extreme hunting), it's up to every single other human being to try and, not only make things right, but to make sure the same problem doesn't happen again. Since this has been proven impossible, we have to move to plan B (move rhinos somewhere else). I hope this sorts things out.

I hope one day I will be able to do more. I come from a place 60 Kms near India which is the only home of the one-horned rhino and I am aware of the threats to this fine species. Have a safe flight ;)

Wishing each and every Rhino moved a safe, peaceful, stress-free journey and hoping that they soon settle in their new environment. Wishing Rhinos Without Borders every success with each relocation. It is so sad that it has come to this but thank you RWB and all supporters for making this possible. May all Rhinos and Wildlife everywhere live their lives free from the pain and suffering caused by human greed. Finally may the brave rangers and anti-poaching patrols everywhere stay safe and be well-equipped for their invaluable work and contribution to the conservation our precious wildlife.

What is happening with the animals in the world today is incredibly sad and it is wonderful to see people like yourselves going all out to better this for the animals.
